Literature Text

you sit down and you tell me that
you can't sit on the summer ground without
pulling out blades of grass with your
balled-up fists
and that every time a candle is lit
you just have to stick your fingers
into the burning wax and make them into
little warriors with helmets melting into
their faces.

you tell me that you've seen 2 shooting
stars in the whole time that you have been
alive, and both of them
went past so quickly
that you couldn't wish quite fast enough.

your voice falls to a whisper
and you tell me that you think you might
feel sad about that.

so i take both of your hands and i pull
them away from me and i put them back
where they belong. the next day, i buy you
a calendar and i mark off the next meteor shower
for you. i do not wrap it up. i do not give it to you.

i hang it on your wall, and i hope
that this time, you do not miss it.
