i could never quite get the hang
of muting guitar strings, could never
quite rest my finger exactly right
(don't push down too hard,
don't press too lightly)
and i guess i find balancing you
beneath my fingers rather like
the feel of muting nylon,
biting the inside of my cheek and
straining to swap barre chords
in one effortless slide of the hand

until the tissue on the tips
of these fingers is mushed up
and red and sticky and there's no
hope for pretty hands ever again,
